Grief Turned to Joy
By Susie Hale and Susan Slade, June 2016
The cat-o-nine-tails, the crown of thorns,
The agony their Master suffered on the cross.
Tremendous sorrow would overwhelm them
As they realized the extent of their loss.
Mourning the death of their Lord and their hope
His disciples cowered in an upper room
Fearing the nails would next pierce their hands
While Jesus spent three days in a borrowed tomb,
But come Sunday morning, they would be amazed.
The tomb was empty, the stone rolled away.
Then Jesus appeared to them multiple times,
Was seen by hundreds over 40 days.
At Pentecost the Lord’s promise was fulfilled,
The Holy Spirit came upon them as a mighty wind,
Tongues of fire rested upon each believer,
and a flower of joy that would never end.
