The dandelion is a
deceitful bloom,
For it carries the
potential for certain doom.
That cute yellow
flower becomes a ball of spores,
Which when blown by
wind turns into scores
Of ugly, grass
killing weeds!
Our tongue should
never be like this,
Dripping words that
promise bliss,
hiding evil
intentions all the while.
Our lips should never
speak with guile,
Lest we be sewing
evil seeds.
Peace is what we must
pursue.
Good is what we
should strive to do.
Thus we’ll love life
and see good days,
Confident God hears
us when we pray
And knowing he’ll
meet our needs.
“Whoever would love
life and see good days
must keep his tongue
from evil
and his lips from deceitful
speech.
He must turn from
evil and do good:
he must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the
Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the
Lord is against those who do evil.”
1 Peter 3:10-12
quoting Psalm 34:12-16
dŏlŏs1388 – (prob. mean. to
decoy): a trick (bait), i.e. (fig.) wile: - craft, deceit, guile, subtlety.
Our world
rewards crafty, tricky people in many ways. They are often thought of as
clever. However, in God’s kingdom being deceitful causes us to lose out on
blessings. We gain by doing good and pursuing peace. “Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9).
Father, help me to refrain from being a dandelion in your
garden, appearing righteous on the outside but filled with guile. Help me to be
a peacemaker and someone who does good as a witness for Christ.
